THE FOUR-DIMENSIONAL EDUCATION FRAMEWORK

The Center for Curriculum Redesign:

  • The Center for Curriculum Redesign (CCR) is a non-profit global organization dedicated to improving Education via answering the question:  “What should students learn for the 21st century?”

  • 1800's were the last major changes to curriculum as a response to the sudden growth in societal and human capital needs. The 21st century bears little resemblance to the 19th century and calls for a deeply redesigned education curriculum to include dimensions of Knowledge, Skills, Character and Meta-Learning.

  • CCR brings together international organizations, jurisdictions, academic institutions, corporations, and non-profit organizations including foundations.

  • Focuses on both designing and propagating new curricula.

  • The Knowledge Navigator - tool to explore linkages between disciplines.

FOUR DIMENSIONS

  • Knowledge -  what we know and understand.  Balance and synthesize theoretical content with skills that can be applied to the real world.

  • Skills - how we use what we know.  Higher-order skills are essential for deep learning and for demonstrating knowledge through performance.

    • 21st Century Skills

      • Creativity

      • Critical thinking

      • Communication

      • Collaboration

  • Character - how we behave and engage in the world. Builds foundation for life-long learning, supports personal and professional relationships, and develops personal values and virtues to interact within a global world.

    • Six Essential Character Qualities:

      • Mindfulness

      • Curiosity

      • Courage

      • Resilience

      • Ethics

      • Leadership

  • Meta-Learning - how we reflect which involves adapting, predicting, monitoring, and evaluating one’s learning.  Meta Learning is essential for creating lifelong learning habits and learning the other three dimensions to ensure transfer of learning beyond its original
