Lifelong Learning Skills for

College and Career Readiness:

  • American Institutes for Reserch, College and Career Readiness Center, provides resources and implementation tools. http://www.ccrscenter.org/

  • Lifelong Learning Skills provide foundation for learning.

  • Research in education, psychology, and labor economics has identified the set of competencies that makes up lifelong learning skills as positively associated with academic achievement and other aptitudes that are important precursors to, and elements of, post-secondary and career success.

  • Social and emotional learning (SEL), higher-order thinking skills, application of knowledge in cross-disciplinary contexts, academic success, employability skills. Core competencies include self-awareness; recognizing one’s emotions and values as well as one’s strengths and limitations; self-management; managing emotions and behaviors to achieve one’s goals; social awareness; showing understanding and empathy for others; relationship skills; forming positive relationships; working in teams and dealing directly with conflict; responsible decision making; making ethical, constructive choices about personal and social behavior.

  • Competency types – cognitive, intrapersonal and interpersonal.

Career Pathways Modules

Designing a Career Pathways System includes four-chapter module with each chapter including a facilitator’s guide, slide presentation, and activity handouts.

Integrating Employability Skills

Interactive module – a collection PowerPoint slides, handouts, sample agenda, a workbook and tools for individuals or state workgroups, and a facilitator’s guide – provides the following activities:

  • Introduces participants to the Employability Skills Framework and explains why it is important for all students

  • Connects employability skills with other education initiatives

  • Provides tools and strategies to prioritize employability skills at the state, employer, district, and individual teacher levels
